108  “As the street-art boom gained momentum during the early years of the twenty first century, 108 found himself becoming increasingly dismayed by the often banal route it appeared to be taking.  In contradistinction, he started to re-explore the abandoned buildings and factories in Alessandria that he had frequented during his youth.  The combination of stark conctete walls and rationalist architecture he encountered there, together with the practical necessity of producing something both cheaply and quickly (a factor that had also inspired his use of adhesive stickers), led to the next stage in his articstic journey, what we might call 108’s ‘black period' (Rafael Schacter on His “World Atlas of Street Art and Graffiti”)

ALEXEY LUKA  is a Russian artist, born in 1983, living and working in Moscow. He is a graduate of the acclaimed Moscow Architectural Institute.  Using a myriad of techniques in his work: aerosol, acrylic, assemblage and collage, Alexey has developed a strong sense of composition and color.  The work has reference to both constructivism and the Dutch movement of neo-plasticism.

ANNA TARATIEL – AKA ‘OVNI’ is a Spanish artist currently based in Amsterdam. “Ovni” (Spanish for UFO) is accomplished large scale indoor and outdoor installation artist. Her bold use of hypnotic color combinations and layered geometry is signature.

BRITTANY GOULD makes complex geometric structures from folded paper. Many of these structures incorporate light – resulting in beautiful luminous sculptural works. Gould uses light as a tool to create imaginary space and shadows as a form of transient minimalism.

CHINNY BOND was born in Bogota, Colombia in 1982. and is now an Amsterdam based artist working with the collective The London Police.  The work shown in Direction / Instruction is the artist’s solo, more abstract, geometric, flat, graphic, high contrast work based on the translation of mathematical concepts into visual expressions.

CODY HUDSON is a Chicago based artist and designer.  Cody is well known for his design agency, Struggle Inc, and highly respected as a fine artist.  His work has a friendly simplicity and smart abstraction.  His fine art spans multiple mediums, canvas paintings, print making, assemblage, sculpture and mural making,

EVAN HECOX  Evan Hecox is most widely known for his design contributions to the skateboarding world.  He has designed hundreds of commercial decks for Chocolate Skateboards.  His long list of design clients includes, Volkswagon and Sony, and he recently designed the new state logo for his home state of Colorado.  As a fine art painter and print maker, he was one of the first artists shown at the legendary Alleged Gallery, curated by Aaron Rose.  Rose and Christian Strike  then curated the seminal traveling museum exhibition ‘Beautfiul Losers - Contemporary Art and Street Culture’  where Evan’s work was prominent among an outstanding cast of artists that included many Mission School artists from the San Francisco area where Evan was living and working at the time.  Evan’s traditional illustrative realism is widely known in the fine art world, but his new delving into the more abstract is the interest of this exhibition.

GRAPHIC SURGERY is a pair of Dutch artists, Erris Huigens and Gysbert Zijlstra, who have taken new and bold steps to present flat but complex geometries to accent urban landscapes. The work of Graphic Surgery crosses many boundaries of genre and production method – including design, video, public murals and installations. What remains signature in their practice is a complex geometric visual language and the predominantly black and white color scheme that has become their trademark.

HEATHER DAY  is an American artist and entrepreneur. She is known for her modern abstract murals and large-scale paintings. Her artwork has been featured in galleries and private collections in New York, Madrid, Seoul, Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington D.C and San Francisco.  Day considers her work a form of visual storytelling, where each painting acts as a page to a larger story about “risk and comfort.  Citing the lines and textures of nature, travel, music and the depth of the color blue as her main sources of inspiration, Day works primarily with paint and non-traditional materials on canvas. She also works in both interior and exterior murals.

LENNARD SCHUURMANS is a Dutch multidisciplinary artist dually interested in geometric abstraction – inspired by the backgrounds of 50s animation – and vintage signage. He uses language as a tool to convey, with a simple word or several word phrase, a powerful emotive idea in each piece. His constructivist pieces with interchangeable parts also invite play into his work. Lennard uses materials found on the street or recovered from attics as base materials for his work.

LIAM SNOOTLE

There is something about these rigid abstract forms floating above a doorway or plastered over somebody’s tagging that makes them even more exciting.  I Love the way he plays with the context of his works; one second these shapes are making the most fascinating focal point in a display of perfect interior design, the next they are attached to cement walls in a laneway somewhere hidden, and then the next they are adorning the walls of an art gallery and looking perfectly at home - Petra Nicel

MARY IVERSON is a painter and public artist.  Her paintings explore the balance between the natural world and industrial activities, inspiring conversations about the causes and consequences of climate change. In 2015, her work was featured in Foreign Policy Magazine, Huffington Post, and The Boston Review.  In August, 2015, she was the cover artist for Juxapoz Magazine.  Her work is represented by galleries in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, and Germany.  Her most recent mural was part of the Shop Small Mural Program sponsored by American Express and curated by Juxtapoz Magazine.  Mary teaches visual art at Skagit Valley College, in Mount Vernon Washington where she is a tenured faculty member.

NIELS SHOE MEULMAN is a visual artist, known for his gestural paintings which reveal vivid traces of graffiti and calligraphy.  He revolutionized the art of graffiti writing when he initiated the Callifgraffiti movement, claiming ‘a word is an image and writing is painting’.  Being a graffiti pioneer from Amsterdam, Shoe tagged along with New York counterparts like Dondi White, Rammellzee, and Keith Haring in the 1980’s.  Equally influenced by abstract expressionist painters and pop artists, he gradually found a unique way to translate street attitude to galleries and museums.  Experimenting with the traditional medium of paint-on-canvas but also unafraid to venture into other domains like conceptual installations and poetry, he continues to push the limits of the global urban contemporary art movement.  His public installation works are often spectacle and performance based during their creation.

RAMON BONILLA Rather than an attempt at representation, Ramon’s simulated environments which are devoid of any concerns with identity or history, act as an after-image of our ever growing number of transient surroundings. Ramon Bonilla was born and educated in San Juan, Puerto Rico.  He currently is a resident artist at Redline Gallery in Denver, Colorado.

REMI ROUGH has been making images for more than a quarter of a century. His art began on walls and trains in South London in 1984; today it has been exhibited in cities such as Miami, Newcastle, Berlin and New York. A respected train writer, Remi has also played a significant part in the development of ‘abstract graffiti’, a term that seems far too clinical to describe the accomplishments of his work, which has always been about the interplay of color and shape.

RUBIN 415 The son of Finnish immigrant workers in Sweden, Rubin was born and raised in the epicenter of boredom – the concrete projects of Bergsjön, Gothenburg. From this experience, he began picturing walls blossoming before his eyes – and started out on a journey that he’s still on today. Rubin’s abstract geometrical pieces are inspired by the forms of traditional wild style graffiti, but are created in earth-tone color palettes with Scandinavian clean lines – and has developed into a signature style that is internationally respected.

SANDRA FETTINGIS   Statement: “My work is driven  by form and material, while quietly and abstractly pointing at change, pattern breaking and law of attraction.  Interested in mindful living ideas and practices, these concepts and directions have have found their way into my visual practice by way of clean, formulated pattern work via sculptural work, installations and murals.  Employing feminine, yet strong shapes in visual systems, I strive to demonstrate change by layering and contrasting materials such as acrylic, styrene, wood, paper and paint, and utilize the laser for its precision, while formulating systematic guidelines, repetition and purposefully restrained color palettes.“

SCOTT ALBRECHT was born in 1983 in New Brunswick, NJ, and raised in Bethlehem Township, NJ. In 2003, he received a degree in Graphic Design from The Art Institute of Philadelphia. Albrecht is currently based in Brooklyn, NY and a member of The Gowanus Studio Space. His work incorporates elements of woodworking, hand-drawn typography and geometric collage using vintage printed ephemera and found objects.

‘THELOSTOBJECT’ is the artist moniker of Hyland Mather. Hyland has long been involved with contemporary art and street culture as the owner of Andenken Gallery. As the artist X-O, he is known for collecting materials – which he calls ‘Lost Objects’ – and assembling them in a variety of interesting and playful ways – from abandoned paper collage pieces to large scale street pieces and indoor murals. Color, composition, form, text, and a thrill of the challenge of using whatever is in his path or can be hunted ‘in the wilds’ of urban or rural settings are all contributing and important characteristics of his work – and have developed into a unique signature style.
